I teach drama and use drama techniques to support the learning process of young people that are studying ESOL(English for speakers of other languages) or are part of EAL (English as an Additional Language) classes. I work mainly with community groups, new arrivals, refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.

In my workshops I explore all aspects of drama including acting, performing, improvisation, voice and movement. I encourage young people to work individually but also in groups so that they can learn to work with others, make new friends and  build their confidence.

"  I think drama is not only an art that teaches one how to act or perform, drama can develop and improve many other areas of everyday human life."

Drama helps individuals to raise their self-esteem and confidence. In every session students have the opportunity to express their emotions and feelings in a safe environment.

Through  games and fun activities  they learn how to interact and communicate with each other verbally and non verbally. Drama is an excellent way to improve language and social skills allowing young people to learn outside the classroom in a playful, fun, creative and artistic  environment.

I currently work for the following organisations:

¬Oval House Theatre: “We are London”

“We are London” is a youth-led arts project that bridges the gap between young Londoners from new communities, specifically refugees and asylum seekers, and young Londoners from more established communities.  Young people use drama, dance, music, film making and photography to create new work that explores their ideas and concerns.  Each year at least 10 young people from the project train in youth leadership. There are opportunities for some of the young people to progress onto apprenticeships at Oval House.

¬Lewisham College, ESOL Department

As part of the Lewisham College curriculum, I teach drama to 16 – 18 year old ESOL students. I offer them an alternative way of learning English  using different art forms like drama, video, mime, puppetry, masks, physical theatre and story telling.

¬Attic Theatre Company: ”Many Voices” – the Refugee Project

I work with 15 to 18 year old recently arrived migrants and refugees, as part of the Link Project at Bishopsford Art College. Every year we give a performance or produce a video that is shown during  Refugee Week.

¬London Bubble Theatre Company: 6 – 8 year olds

The aim of teaching drama to this young group is to develop their interest in performing, self-expression and creativity. We use games, songs, puppetry making and shadow puppets, physical theatre, music and video.

¬Half Moon Young People’s Theatre: A specialist group for disabled teenagers

I work on a one to one basis as an access and individual support worker. I assist a young person during the drama sessions, encouraging and helping him to participate in the activities.
